Characteristic of Living Respiration :

All living organisms breathe to live. All living things inhale oxygen rich air and exhale out carbon dioxide rich air. This process of exchange of gases is known as breathing.  Animals like tigers, cats, dogs and human beings breathe through lungs. Insects like cockroaches, flies, mosquitoes and grasshoppers, breathe through air holes present on the surface of their bodies. Fish  breathe through gills.

Plants breathe through tiny pores present on the surface of their leaves called stomata. Aquatic organisms respire to get energy. Respiration is the process of breakdown of food in the body of an organism with the help of to release carbon dioxide and water and energy. Carbon dioxide and water vapour are given out through exhalation.
